(CNN) — Was it only a matter of time? Could Macy’s really be breaking a 155-year tradition by staying open on Thanksgiving Day?

There are reports that Macy’s will open on Thanksgiving Day and stay open for 24 hours straight.

An employee told the Chicago Sun-Times that she received a memo stating the store would open on Thanksgiving at 8:00 p.m.

Macy’s has not responded to the reports.

The trend started in 2012, when Walmart and other retailers announced they would open their stores at 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

In 2011, many stores began opening at midnight on the morning of Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving.
