Monday marks one year since Azana Salon shooting

BROOKFIELD (WITI) -- Monday, October 21st marks one year since the shooting at Azana Salon and Spa in Brookfield where three women were killed and four others wounded before the shooter took his own life.

Zina Daniel, Maelyn Lind and Cary Robuck lost their lives in a shooting spree carried out by Daniel's estranged husband, Radcliffe Haughton. Daniel had a restraining order against Haughton, who was still able to purchase a firearm by posting an ad online.

"She was a very loving, caring person. She walked into a room and she lit up a room with her smile" said Daniel's brother, Elvin. "It does not seem like a year."

Elvin Daniel was inspired to take up a cause after the tragedy that ended his sister's life. Over the past year, Daniel has met with dozens of lawmakers, NRA members and traveled to Washington D.C. to lobby for universal background checks.

"I thought it was very reasonable. I thought it made sense, but it didn't pass," said Daniel.

Azana will be closed on Monday in remembrance of the victims. Throughout the month, the salon has been raising money for The Women's Center of Waukesha.

"The Azana shooting was the ultimate tragedy of domestic violence," said Mary Hennis of The Women's Center. "I gasped, I remember that, and I just thought oh dear God."

Hennis hopes the somber anniversary encourages more people to speak out instead of remain silent.

Monday night, the families of all three victims will host a memorial service and candle light vigil, along with the Sojourner Family Peace Center.
