33-year-old woman killed in two-vehicle crash overnight Sunday

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Sunday morning, December 8th.

It happened around 2:13 a.m. in the 3200 block of W. Burleigh.

Police say a vehicle was headed westbound on W. Burleigh when it crossed into the eastbound lanes and was struck by another vehicle.

A 33-year-old female passenger in the westbound vehicle died at the scene, and a 34-year-old male passenger in the striking vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Police say it is probable that one or more occupants of the westbound vehicle fled the scene on foot, and detectives continue to attempt to locate these individuals and work to determine who was driving at the time of the crash.

Police say the striking vehicle was driven by a 29-year-old Milwaukee man. The driver and three other occupants were taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Detectives believe a fifth occupant of the striking vehicle fled after the crash, and police are working to identify that person.

Police say officers noticed the westbound vehicle driving without headlights in the area of 9th and Locust shortly before the crash.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over, and officers pursued the vehicle for about one minute, but cancelled the pursuit in the 3000 block of N. 23rd Street.

Then, police received a call of a serious accident at 32nd and Burleigh.

Officers responded and determined the crash involved the same vehicle that the squad had briefly pursued a short time earlier.

Police say witnesses, as well as video evidence confirm the westbound vehicle was not being pursued at the time of the crash.
