Occupy Madison helping the homeless find housing

MADISON (WITI) -- Some members of a Madison homeless community now have a place to call their own -- just in time for Christmas.

The first tenants moved into mobile homes on Christmas Day.

Madison city ordinances allow the small houses to be parked on the street, as long as they're moved every two days.

One resident said it's nice to move in during the holidays -- especially since she's never owned her own home.

"It's very exciting, because it will be ours. Something I'll own, you know?" Betty Ybarra said.

Occupy Madison is leading the effort to get these homes to the homeless.

The group is working with local churches to allow up to three houses in each of their parking lots.

Eventually, Occupy Madison wants to buy land and create a village of up to 30 homes.
