Full freeway closure on Hoan Bridge begins Friday night

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- There will be a full freeway closure on the Hoan Bridge beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, January 3rd to shift traffic onto the northbound/westbound side of the system between 4th St. and Carferry Drive.

Detours will be posted with the main detour being I-43. The traffic shift will allow work to advance on the redecking of the Hoan Bridge and the reconstruction of the structures along I-794 near downtown.

The closure is expected to last until Saturday afternoon and will take advantage of favorable weather conditions. Motorists will be able to access the Plankinton exit from I-43 and drivers will be able to exit at St. Paul/James Lovell when approaching from the west. The work on the Bridge deck is expected to begin on January 6th, weather permitting.

There will be changes to some downtown ramps as a part of the traffic shift. The ramp that currently exits from the Hoan to Milwaukee St. will now serve as an on ramp for southbound traffic. The Jackson St. on ramp will switch to and exit ramp from eastbound I-794 with drivers being able to access both Jackson and Van Buren from the ramp.

WisDOT is asking motorists to allow for additional time and remain alert and to use caution in the construction zone. For more information check out the project website at 511wi.gov.
