Roundy's stores to close at 8 p.m. Monday due to extreme cold



MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Heading to the grocery store is a trip you may not want to make in this bitter cold, but if the refrigerator is empty you have no choice.

"I think it's really cold. Negative temperatures don't comprehend for me. I don't understand how it can be this cold," said Metro Market shopper Tony Sewer.

You may want to hurry if a stop at the store is on your to do list!

All Roundy's stores are closing at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6th.

"We have a lot of employees who ride the bus each day. Therefore, closing early allows them to get home before really the wind chill picks up and they're not standing out at the bus corner when it's not running as frequently," said Metro Market Store Director Tony Kuchinsky.

To warm up customers stopping in, Metro Market on Van Buren handed out free hot chocolate on Monday.

"It kind of warms your whole body -- kind of begins your day off right after you walk out of the cold," said Metro Market shopper Jennifer Dettman.

It's the employees out pushing carts who have it the worst on a day like this.

To make their trips outside quicker, Metro Market offered carry out service for the day.

"It's nice because the customer can climb right into their car. They don't have to worry about loading their groceries. Then the employee just has to run groceries out the car. They don't have to go round up all of the carts across the entire parking lot," said Kuchinsky.

Metro Market employee Brandon Brimley says he doesn't mind this weather. He even rode his bike to work!

"This year I dressed right. I like being out there because customers are like 'wow' when they see me out there," said Brimley.

A great attitude to have when Mother Nature takes chilly turn.

All Roundy's stores will re-open on Tuesday at their regularly scheduled time.
