Strong solar storm could bring Aurora Borealis to Midwest
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The National Weather Service (NWS) says a very energetic solar eruption was observed on Tuesday, January 7th. It's expected the arrival of the Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) will arrive either late Wednesday or early Thursday -- and cause a geomagnetic storm.
Since the eruption on the sun was intense and directed at Earth, experts with the NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) predict the solar storm will be strong.
The arrival of the geomagnetic storm could result in the Aurora Borealis (or northern lights) being visible in the Midwest. In the past, the northern lights have been seen as far south as Illinois or around 50 degrees latitude.
