Fundraising goal met for homeless dog in need of surgery

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — The Wisconsin Humane Society announced Thursday, January 23rd that they have met their fundraising goal for Lady, a homeless dog in need of surgery.

Lady is a two-year-old dog. She has been featured on Facebook and even appeared on FOX6 as the pet of the day. But after a few weeks of being in the adoption program, Lady began to limp. It was a sign there was something seriously wrong with her.

Lady has a knee problem in both legs: luxating patellas, which is a condition where the kneecaps pop out of place. Without surgery, her knees will deteriorate rapidly and cause her a lifetime of pain. It is a debilitating condition, but one that can be treated.

The staff member at the Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center (WVRC) in Waukesha learned about Lady’s condition, and graciously agreed to donate a large portion of the surgery. WHS  needed to raise $2,700 to cover the rest of the surgery -- which has been achieved.

"We can't thank everyone enough for the outpouring of support; we had so many calls, emails and online donations yesterday that our staff members were just floored. Our community is the best," said Wisconsin Human Society's Director of Communications.

Now, it's time to find her a home.

“Her new adopters will be going home knowing they have to take her into surgery at WVRC and that it will take several weeks to recover at home,” said Angela Speed with the Wisconsin Humane Society, “she is a special needs dog and needs to recover for several weeks after her surgery in the new home.”
