Special Olympian honored at 8th annual basketball classic

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Special Olympian Brandon Sprewer was just 22-year-old in 2006 when he was murdered during an armed robbery while waiting for a bus. But Sprewer's spirit lives on as hundreds gather annually to compete in a basketball tournament -- Brandon's favorite sport.

Saturday, February 8th marked the 8th year for the Brandon Sprewer Basketball Classic. The tournament is held at Milwaukee's Vincent High School.

"It's the competition and it makes your attitude better and it makes your adjusting to life better and it helps a lot," said Special Olympian Craig Becker.

68 teams of Special Olympians from Milwaukee, Ozaukee and Washington Counties participated in the event, marking the largest classic to date.

Many athletes say it's a good opportunity to enjoy the sport Brandon loved the most while honoring his memory.

The event continues Sunday morning and is free to the public.
