Sturtevant woman charged with OWI after car lands on creek

MOUNT PLEASANT (WITI) -- A Sturtevant woman is charged in connection with an incident in which she is accused of driving under the influence with minors in the vehicle after she allegedly crashed her vehicle in Mount Pleasant.

37-year-old Jessica Ramsey faces the following charges:

A criminal complaint in the case says officers were dispatched to the 7500 block of Braun Road in Mount Pleasant for a vehicle crash in which several individuals were trapped inside the vehicle.

The complaint says a vehicle struck a guardrail post, and the impact pushed the vehicle approximately 5 feet to the east, and the vehicle came to rest off the roadway, over a creek.

The creek was frozen over, and the vehicle was sitting at a 45-degree angle, being held up by a tree.

Officers made contact with Ramsey, whom they say had red, glassy, bloodshot eyes and appeared to be disoriented. The complaint says Ramsey had a strong odor of intoxicants coming from her person, and she admitted to having been drinking earlier in the day.

Officers noted there were three minor children in the vehicle with Ramsey -- a three-year-old, a seven-year-old, and a 10-year-old, according to the complaint.

The complaint says Ramsey told officials she was headed eastbound when she struck a patch of snow and attempted to correct her vehicle when she lost control and struck the guardrail.

The complaint says field sobriety tests were planned at the police station, but Ramsey refused to comply.

She was eventually taken to the hospital for a blood draw, which noted the ethanol level in Ramsey's blood was .288/100 mL.
