Winter Parking Regulations in Milwaukee have expired

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- We saw snow in southeastern Wisconsin on Saturday, March 1st, but one day later -- a sign that spring may finally be on its way! Winter Parking Regulations for the city of Milwaukee have now expired.

Winter Parking Regulations for the city of Milwaukee have been in effect since December 1st.

From December 1st to March 1st, no overnight parking is allowed on through streets and bus routes in the city of Milwaukee.

Parking is allowed on some streets in the city overnight -- as long as drivers make sure they're parked on the correct side of the street.

These streets are posted with signs reading "No Parking" on one side of the street, either for the entire December 1 to March 1 period, or with a monthly alternation of the prohibited side.

When there are four or more inches of snow -- parking is not allowed on streets with sign posted via Milwaukee's "Four Inch Rule."

If a Snow Emergency is declared in the City of Milwaukee, parking is prohibited between the hours of 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on all city streets.

A Snow Emergency is declared whenever snow falls during any period of 24 hours or less to a depth which is declared by the Commissioner of Public Works to constitute "a serious public hazard."

No matter where you park -- you must move your vehicle within 24 hours.

It's a lot to keep track of -- and now that the Winter Parking Regluations have expired, you'd expect drivers might be breathing a sigh of relief, but some are finding it hard to think of spring when it's still so cold. Additionally, they say roads in the city of Milwaukee have taken a beating this winter.

"The streets are very dangerous," Lenore Lee said.

Drivers must try to avoid potholes and try to see around snowbanks extending into the roadway -- and now, with more parking available on city streets, drivers will have a narrower space in which to maneuver.

"I could have probably nailed it better than I did," Sara Meaney said of her parking job on Sunday, March 2nd.

She says having the parking spaces restricted during winter available now can be liberating.

"I think sometimes you decide not to go places because you're not sure how easy to find a (parking) spot it's going to be," Meaney said.

The City of Milwaukee DPW can still declare a Snow Emergency, or put the "Four Inch Rule" into effect if we do see any more big snowfalls this winter.
