Mitchell students excited to start at Wind Point on Wednesday

RACINE (WITI) -- The formerly vacant Wind Point Elementary School in Racine is being dubbed the "mini Mitchell." Students displaced after last week's fire at Mitchell School in Racine had the opportunity to tour Wind Point during an open house on Tuesday evening, March 4th. More than 400 elementary school students will be back in the classroom at Wind Point on Wednesday.

Students roamed the halls of Wind Point Elementary School with excitement on Tuesday evening -- many of them happy to be reunited with teachers and friends.

For second-grader Shyah Davis, it feels like home.

"I was like 'Ms. Willy! Ms. Willy is here! I like it," Davis said.

Davis' new classroom is filled with new seats and new books -- but a familiar feeling.

"I'm excited that I have everything in here. I'm excited to be here," Davis said.

For many, getting to take a look at the school, and knowing the kids will be back in the classroom on Wednesday offers a feeling of relief.

"I'm glad they had this facility available to us in a situation like this. Just happy to have them back in school," Willie Showers, the grandfather of one of the Mitchell children told FOX6 News.

Teachers echoed the students' excitement on Tuesday night.

"I'm excited to get back into a routine and get my kids back and do what we do best her -- get them learning," one teacher said.

"I give it a thumbs up," Davis said of her new school.

All of the Mitchell students will be bused to Wind Point. They will be picked up at the Youth for Christ Church before school, and dropped off there after school.
