Lottery for taxi cab permits held in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The drawing to determine which of the potential applicants may apply for 100 new city of Milwaukee taxi cab permits took place on Monday morning, March 17th at the Milwaukee Public Library’s Centennial Hall.

FOX6 News has learned the city of Milwaukee has received 1,707 “intent to apply” forms for the taxicab license lottery. By rule, individuals are allowed to submit up to two applications for a permit.

The addition of 100 new taxi cab permits to the city’s existing pool of 320 was among the reforms championed by Alderman Robert Bauman to increase the quality and quantity of cab service in the city.

Some of the future cab drivers at Monday's lottery were quite excited to hear their name called.

"This is now a stepping stone, having my own business. Something like this will be fantastic," Theodore Manao said.

"I don't have to work for somebody now. I got my own cab number so now I can do it myself," Abdullahi Mohamad said.

Those selected for taxi cab licenses on Monday will have to pass a background check and vehicle check before becoming cab drivers.
