Seven years in prison for Shawn Bridges for 29th & Atkinson shooting

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- 43-year-old Shawn Bridges -- charged in connection with a shooting that occurred near 29th and Atkinson on February 28th, 2013 has been sentenced in the case.

Bridges pleaded guilty to two charges in the case: first-degree recklessly endangering safety and felon in possession of a firearm -- felony charges.

Two misdemeanor charges -- operating a firearm while intoxicated and resisting or obstructing an officer were dismissed.

Shawn Bridges was sentenced to seven years in prison (with credit for 406 days served) and four years of extended supervision.

Police say Bridges, who has an extensive criminal record, got out of his car near 29th and Atkinson on February 28th, 2013 and opened fire with an assault-style rifle on 10 people nearby.

Two people, a man and a woman, were struck by the gunfire and wounded.

The criminal complaint in this case indicates an officer observed a group of about 10 people standing on the corner near West Ruby Street — and observed a man standing nearby, holding a black Glock handgun facing toward the ground.

Officers later observed Bridges advancing towards the group, holding an assault weapon and shooting toward the crowd — according to the complaint.

Then, Bridges got into a Ford Expedition and drove away from the scene.

Bridges was eventually stopped by police — but ran from officers on foot. Officers gave chase, and two officers slipped on ice and fell to the ground. One officer sustained injuries during this chase.

Eventually, a K-9 officer was able to apprehend Bridges.

A physician later determined that Bridges’ BAC was .25 and his blood indicated the presence of marijuana — according to the criminal complaint.
