Household hazardous waste collection held in West Allis

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- On Saturday, April 12th the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District held a household hazardous waste collection for Milwaukee County residents at State Fair Park.

"The MMSD, Milwaukee Metro. Sewerage District, sponsors this program to try to keep things out of the water and out of people, you know dumping it down the drain, flushing it down the toilet, but also to keep it out of the landfills," said Joe Baumann, general manager of Veolia Environmental Services.

As people get ready to start spring cleaning it's important to dispose of hazardous waste properly. Baumann says paint is the most popular disposal item brought to the waste collection.

"Aerosol cans, that's probably another big one. We see a lot of that. Lots of light bulbs and lawn and garden chemicals, too," says Baumann.

Baumann also explains there is a mobile disposal opportunity available to Milwaukee County residents that has been around since 1997.

If you're a Milwaukee County resident interested in using the program, but tight on time, you can simply drive up and have your wasted pulled right out of your car.
