Roads closed in Ozaukee Co. as officials monitor flooding

OZAUKEE COUNTY (WITI) -- The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office's Division of Emergency Management has been monitoring water levels since the start of the first round of rain this weekend. Officials expect the Milwaukee River to crest at around 13.5 feet in the area of County Highway C (Pioneer Road) some time on Tuesday, April 15th. Officials have closed roads in Ozaukee County due to flooding.

Ozaukee County Sheriff's officials say: "While we do not have point forecasts for river crest levels for other points on the river or other waterways in the county, we believe most will experience at least some high water and low area flooding."

Folks are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring National Weather Service and local media broadcasts for up to the minute information.

The Sheriff's Office says each municipality in the county has been taking steps to monitor the situation and are prepared to take action where warranted.

If you have water levels rising and feel you need assistance please contact your City, Village or Town hall first with reports of flooding and requests for sand bags or other protective and mitigation actions.

Sheriff's officials say in the event of a life-threatening emergency, call 911. During high water and flooding conditions DO NOT drive or walk into high water!

Ankle deep moving water is enough to sweep you off your feet and carry you downstream.

Entering water with your car is likely to make the engine stall and could lift the car and carry it off the road way quite rapidly.

In addition, you may not be able to tell where the edge of the roadway is or if there has been a wash out.

Flood waters can carry contaminates from flooded farm fields and septic systems creating health concerns for those in the water.

Debris that may not be seen on the surface of the water could also be a significant hazard.

During this spring break time children and adults could see this as an exciting opportunity to investigate the rushing waters or have a try at swift water cannoning.

Sheriff's officials are urging folks to please stay well away from swiftly moving water and save the enjoyment of a day on the water for calmer weather and river conditions.

Even highly experienced paddlers can get into trouble very quickly in these conditions.
