Driver alert: Crews begin resurfacing 16-mile stretch of I-94

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- With warmer weather moving in across the area, motorists can expect to start seeing more orange barrels as construction season kicks off. Many Wisconsin roadways took a beating during the long, cold winter as plows and salt trucks went on a seemingly endless parade.

DOT officials say a 16-mile stretch of I-94 through Milwaukee and Racine Counties has become bumpy, littered with cracks, and its surface is deteriorating.

On Monday, April 21st, crews will begin base-patching and resurfacing both the northbound and southbound lanes from County KR, north to County G. The majority of the project will take place during overnight hours between 9:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

"It's anticipated to be late summer, sometime in July or August we should be completed," said Ryan Luck with the Wisconsin DOT.

A second phase of the project will begin after the first is completed. Crews will rehabilitate and replace two inches of asphalt surfacing on I-94 from County G to just north of Rawson. Luck says that phase of the project will also be done at night.

"With these two projects, we should have rehabilitated the surfaces on the interstate on these two important segments," said Luck.

The goal is a smoother ride for drivers. Officials say it shouldn't slow motorists too much and believes the final product will be worth the time.
