Rescued: Woman pulled from Somers home after dryer fire

SOMERS (WITI) -- Somers Fire and Rescue responded to a home on 27th Street around 2:45 a.m. Monday, April 28th for a report of a possible clothes dryer fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke on all levels of the structure and observed a woman on the second floor threatening to jump.

While waiting for fire apparatus to arrive on scene, a sheriff's deputy ran into the home and rescued the woman.

Firefighters detected crackling sounds in the basement walls and charring, but in an area not near the dryer. Walls were overhauled to locate the fire and smoke was cleared from the building.

The fire damage was contained to the basement; water damage occurred in the basement and in a small area of the first-floor and smoke damage occurred throughout the structure.

Two residents of the building, one on each level, were displaced. The Red Cross was called to assist them.

At the time the call came in, both Somers fire stations were empty due to a report of a pulse-less, non-breathing person at a residence in the far northwest corner of the town.

Due to the manpower shortage, Somers command called for a MABAS box alarm to send crews to assist Somers crews at the fire scene and to man the main Somers fire station.
