Vet: "It looks incredible" under burned dog's "pigskin bandages"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- FOX6 News has received an update on Beatrice -- the five-year-old mixed-breed dog stolen from her very own yard, and found near Potawatomi Bingo Casino, burned over 90% of her body.

Beatrice undergoes "first-of-its-kind" procedure

On Monday, Beatrice underwent a first-of-its-kind procedure in which heterograft (pigskin) was applied to the dog's second and third-degree burns.

A trauma and critical care specialist and surgeon from Froedtert Hospital (Dr. John Weigelt) and Beatrice's veterinarian (Dr. Marla Lichtenberger) at the Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals teamed up for the unique procedure meant to help Beatrice's severe burns to heal.

On Thursday, May 1st, Beatrice returned to the Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals, and Dr. Lichtenberger took some of the pigskin off and replaced it with a new layer.

Dr. Lichtenberger reports: "It looks incredible" under Beatrice's pigskin -- indicating the pigskin is doing what it is supposed to do, and helping Beatrice's burns to heal.

Dr. Lichtenberger says Beatrice is doing well.

She will remain at the Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals until Saturday, May 3rd, when she will be able to go home.

Care will continue for another two weeks, to include hydrotherapy at home.

After two weeks have passed, Beatrice's veterinarian will assess what the next steps are.
