Search for suspect: MU, police search investigate 3 robberies



MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Department of Public Safety along with Milwaukee police responded to the Marquette campus early Friday morning, May 2nd following three robberies and a shooting.

The incident occurred just after 2:30 a.m. near 18th and Wisconsin.

Marquette University sent out an email to students saying that three robberies were carried out by two suspects at approximately 2:36 a.m.

According to the email, a suspect approached a Marquette student near 18th and Wisconsin and demanded money. The victim turned over their property and was not injured.

The suspect then approached a second student and demanded money. That student also turned over property and was not injured.

Following both robberies, a second suspect, who is now in custody, approached a student near a parking structure near 18th and Wisconsin, displayed a handgun and demanded property, according to Marquette's email.

At that time, a brief struggle ensued and the suspect shot the student in the hand. Following the shooting, the first suspect returned the second victim's property and the two suspects fled the scene.

The Department of Public Safety responded to the scene and was able to take the second suspect into custody. The Milwaukee Police Department was also on scene.

The second suspect's weapon was recovered and the area was thoroughly searched for additional weapons, with negative results.

The victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

At this time, authorities are still searching for the first suspect involved in the robberies.

We are thankful for the quick action of the students involved and the continued collaboration between the Department of Public Safety and the Milwaukee Police Department, who immediately responded to the scene. The Department of Public Safety was able to quickly apprehend one of the suspects and recover the weapon. A Marquette staff member is with the student at the hospital and will continue to provide support for the student and his family. Marquette University takes the safety and security of its students extremely seriously, and as is the case with any active safety situation on campus, a text message alert was immediately issued to inform the campus community. Department of Public Safety officers worked closely with the Milwaukee Police Department to search the area for additional weapons, with negative results. MPD continues to search for the second suspect involved.
