Uneasy nerves: Marquette students mugged at gunpoint

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Three Marquette University students were mugged at gunpoint -- one was shot after a struggle. Police say one person is in custody for the crimes -- and just before 5 p.m. Friday, May 2nd, police indicated they arrested a Milwaukee man who may be involved with these crimes.

As if the end of the semester wasn't enough, Marquette students woke on Friday morning, May 2nd to word of three early morning armed robbery attempts.

Milwaukee Police Captain Jason Smith says shortly after 2 :30 a.m., two armed suspects carried out two separate robberies involving two Marquette students near 18th and Wisconsin.

"In a third robbery attempt, in the same area, a victim struggled with an armed suspect and was shot in the hand," said Smith.

The suspected shooter was caught just two blocks away -- near 20th and Wisconsin -- and his gun was recovered nearby.

The shooting victim was treated at a hospital and released.

In the meantime, Capt. Smith tries to clear up any concerns about safety at Marquette.

"This remains one of the safest urban campuses in the country. Nearly every square foot of this campus is covered by surveillance video," said Smith.
