Milwaukee Museum Mile event showcases "unique gems" on city's East Side

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- On Sunday, folks in Milwaukee had a unique opportunity to experience the city's history and culture without digging too far into their wallets. It was all part of Milwaukee's "Museum Mile" event. The event allowed people the opportunity to experience five Milwaukee museums offering free or reduced admission.

The participating museums included:

Several of the museums offered complimentary docent-led tours, light refreshments and champagne, and prize drawings. Free activities for children were also available, including a Milwaukee Museum Mile scavenger hunt.

The event on Sunday, May 4th was the third annual event.

It's something Kevin Walzak says shouldn't be missed!

"There’s an opportunity to see these really unique gems that we have here on the East Side. Maybe you've heard about them but never thought about going, and I think you'll be really pleasantly surprised when you come and experience all these places," Walzak said.

Milwaukee Alderman Nik Kovac said he hopes the event will help to educate visitors to Milwaukee regarding all the access they have to history and culture.

"They know there’s restaurants. They know there’s a movie theater. I don’t know if they realize there’s great museums that you can come by, anytime -- that are open to the public. If you don't know your history, you can be destined to, frankly, to make some mistakes going forward. I think the better that we know our past, the better our future will be," Kovac said.

Sunday's event included transportation to all five museums to encourage families to make it a day on Milwaukee's East Side.

Donna Spars is with the Museum of Wisconsin Art at Saint John's On the Lake.

"Oh my gosh! It's so much fun! This is really a great opportunity for us to showcase all of the wonderful exhibits that are at our facilities -- our art and our history exhibits, and to let people know what we offer, and hope that they’ll keep coming back," Spars said.

Sunday's "Milwaukee Museum Mile" event ran through 4:00 p.m.
