Rail cleanup: Punctured train tank spills diesel fuel

RACINE CO. (WITI) -- The DNR and the Canadian National Railway are working to collect diesel fuel that leaked onto the tracks in the Town of Waterford on Sunday night, May 4th.

The incident occurred near Honey Creek Road and High Dr. around 9:30 p.m.

Authorities say 1,600 gallons of the fuel spilled after a fuel tank on the train hit a piece of metal on the tracks which punctured the fuel tank.

Cleanup crews spent much of Monday, May 5th digging a trench to collect the spillage. The DNR also collected water at the wells of a couple of nearby homes for testing.

Canadian National Railway is paying for the cleanup.
