Holding out hope: Prayer vigil held for 3-year-old shooting victim

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Family and loved ones of the 3-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head Saturday held a prayer vigil for the child Tuesday evening, May 6th.

Kevin Donald remains in critical condition at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. His family tells FOX6 he is awaiting surgery.

According to family reports, the toddler and other children were left alone for a short period of time after the family returned from a shopping trip. Donald somehow got a hold of a loaded gun inside a vehicle's glove compartment.

"Why it wasn't locked, I do not know, but God knows and he'll bring us through this," said Donald's great-aunt, Priscilla Triplett.

The child's younger sister was near him at the time of the shooting.

"She's a child and she'll always remember that and she'll never forget," said Triplett. "It's a tragic situation. We would never expect anything as such to happen to little Kevin."

The family now waits and prays, remaining hopeful the boy will pull through.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
