Why did man approach young boy in Whitefish Bay, young girl in Bayside?

WHITEFISH BAY (WITI) -- Whitefish Bay police are investigating an incident involving a man in his 40s approaching a 12-year-old boy -- and Bayside police are investigating a similar incident involving a young girl.

Police are calling the incident an "unusual/suspicious circumstances case."

Police say the boy was walking near the intersection of Lake Drive and Beaumont Avenue on Monday afternoon, May 5th around 4:00 p.m. -- when a man approached him and tried to hand him a pamphlet.

Police say the boy told the man "no, thank you" -- and kept walking.

Police say the man then got into his vehicle and left the area.

Police say at no time did the man try to touch the child or get him into his vehicle.

Police say this case is not being investigated as a child enticement or child abduction case -- but rather, as a "suspicious circumstances" case.

A similar incident occurred in Bayside around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Police in Bayside say a 13-year-old girl was walking south on N. Regent Road towards E. Brown Deer Road when she was approached by a man in a newer, silver Toyota sedan.

Police say the man was described as a white man between 55 and 70 years of age, with a medium build and gray hair. He is said to have been wearing a white button-up shirt, dress pants and shoes.

Police say the man parked his vehicle -- and approached the girl and attempted to give her something.

The girl refused the offer, and began to walk away.

Police say the man followed her and said "This might be useful later in life."

When a neighbor approached and asked the girl if she knew the man -- police say he got back into his vehicle and fled the scene.
