Students are being encouraged to hit the pavement, but why?

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Hundreds of area students will join students from around the country to celebrate National Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 7th.

National Bike to School Day raises awareness of the need for safe routes for bicycling and walking and emphasizes the importance of a variety of issues, such as physical activity, pedestrian safety and environmental concerns.

This year’s Bike to School Day also features Fire Up Your Feet, a new online tracking program with cash prizes. Over $2,000 will be awarded to schools this May.

Fire Up Your Feet is a state of the art tracking and encouragement tool to help catalyze Safe Routes to School to new levels of success and participation. It’s a great way to extend the energy of Walk and Bike to School Day.

The Fire Up Your Feet program features an interactive website, educational materials and promotional events and opportunities targeting parents and students in K-8 schools.
