New development in Oak Creek, a game changer for downtown

OAK CREEK (WITI) -- New development in the City of Oak Creek will not only change the landscape but transform downtown in a unique way.

Under a tent on the land of the old GM Delphi Plant, a vision is discussed that is about to come to reality.

"We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to build a new downtown," said Mayor Steve Scaffidi.

The announcement of Drexel Town Square, a mixed use development will soon become the center piece of Oak Creek.

"It's a great day for Oak Creek," said Scaffidi.

At a groundbreaking ceremony Scaffidi says the addition will help build a more vibrant and diverse city.

"We want to make sure people have things to do together as a community across every kind of interest you could have," said Scaffidi.

Reminiscent of a traditional downtown, the site will host a myriad of civic, retail, and residential spaces.

"Not only are we building a new City Hall and library, but wrapping around that is one of the largest public squares in Wisconsin, a new 4 point Sheraton hotel a residential component development," said Scaffidi.

It will also boast eateries, like the iconic Water Street Brewery, and much more.

"Meijer's is one of the early drivers that really will bring a lot of people to the site," said Scaffidi.

Doug Seymour, director of community development, says the plans stem heavily from community input.

"A lot of our residents have asked about new restaurants, new things for their kids to do, and new places for the community to gather," said Seymour.

As they take hold of golden shovels and city leaders, project partners also dig into opportunities of an economic impact as well as job creations. Meshing all components makes for a longed, unique area in this suburb.

The 85 acre, mixed use development should be completed by the summer of 2015.
