Creating balance: They're "derby girls," they have full-time jobs AND they're moms!

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- They're tough...they're fierce...and they're not afraid to take a hit! Three of the ladies who skate and battle for the Brew City Bruisers roller derby team are moms!

"While you have to be crazy dedicated to do this, we are also very understanding that other stuff happens too and that's part of why we love it and why we stay," Anneka Lisberg said.

Anna Wilson, along with Brooke Thiele and Anneka Lisberg are three moms who skate for the Brew City Bruisers.

When they're not blocking, hitting and sliding across the derby track, these three women work full-time jobs and raise their children.

"I think it's really important for me to play this. It allows me to get balance of my own. At home I'll be patient and I'll get to the point where I'm really frustrated and it's nice to come here and let some frustrations out but have a lot of fun at the same time," Wilson said.

"I've had my good days and bad days for sure -- where I can leave it on the track and use it to my advantage. You have to find that balance or you're on the bench crying every other jam because your job is really stressful or your kid won't go to sleep that night. It's just crazy," Thiele said.

"We all understand that we have lives, we have jobs, we have families and we have all the stuff we need to balance," Lisberg said.

These roller derby moms say the sport quickly became more like a sisterhood.

Anna Wilson -- known on the track as "Thunderpants" got pregnant shortly after getting involved with the Brew City Bruisers.

"I didn't skate obviously, but they still had me put into the draft so my team chose me, knowing that I wouldn't be able to skate my first season but they picked me anyways. I was very grateful for that," Wilson said.

Wilson is also grateful for what the Bruisers bring to her two children.

"When the kids come here, they're very excited to see all the other skaters," Wilson said.

In fact, the other skaters have become like family to Wilson's children.

"She grew up with all these girls. She has a million aunts, and it's really awesome for her. She's learning to skate. She's four now," Lisberg said.

The derby girls may be the picture of strength and toughness.

"Roller derby is one of the strongest things a woman can do," Thiele said.

But these girls say roller derby doesn't compete with being a mom!
