Allegedly assaulted at gunpoint, neighbors hear the screams

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Police are looking into a report of a woman raped at gunpoint. Officials say they're still looking for a suspect.

Just across the street from where the assault occurred is a school, something that neighbors say only adds to their anxiety.

It's all neighbors can talk about along the stretch of Sherman Blvd. Milwaukee Police say they're investigating reports of a woman raped at a bus stop just before midnight Thursday, May 15th.

"That makes me feel worried; if I have somewhere to go and it’s nighttime, or coming from somewhere, what can happen? If it’s that serious…that’s nothing you should do to a woman," said Mona’shay Howard, a neighbor.

Police say they're still looking for a suspect. Sources tell us the man assaulted the victim at gunpoint. The alleged crime occurred a short distance from Barack Obama School.

"For it to happen so close to a school and I have three daughters of my own, a wife…it’s kind of scary," said David Polnitz, a neighbor.

One neighbor who didn't want to go on camera says she heard a woman screaming for help. A short time later, neighbors describe a large police response.

"Around 12:15 a.m., just seen a lot of police cars come from everywhere; maybe two from this way, three from this way – they kind of swarmed," said neighbor, Anshanela Stokes.

Less than a day later, nothing would indicate the scene of such a despicable crime. But that does little to ease the nerves of neighbors who say there's occasionally trouble around here, but nothing like this.

"It’s very sad because the summer time is coming and you have young women that are working, not only older adults but young women that have to be employed and they don’t have cars," said Stokes.

There is a surveillance camera on the north side of Barack Obama School; the principal says he hasn't yet heard from police about obtaining that footage.
