Great Lakes Church hosting special event for students, first of its kind

RACINE (WITI) -- The annual Racine Unified post-prom event is set for Saturday night, May 17th but that's not the city's only party this weekend. Sunday afternoon, May 18th a second prom is being held, for some special students.

Gavin  Schultz is geeked-up, because he's about to get down!

Friday, the Racine student is just two days away from his first prom, and his favorite song.

"H-A-P-P--Happy!" said Schultz.

Sunday afternoon, at Racine's Festival Hall, a first of its kind event will allow Gavin, who has Autism, and 99 other guests to enjoy A Night To Remember. A prom produced for students with special needs.

"It's gonna be a great night to celebrate and honor these kids," said Jeremy Moore, event director.

Moore says the event should look something like a similar event held in Rockford, Illinois. Adding he's thrilled with the way this community has come together.

"We've had limo teams, and DJs, and boutiques, and hair and make-up professionals have come outta the woodwork to say, 'We wanna donate our time to do all this for you guys'," said Moore.

And that's the idea, to do something special for some special students.

"It's great to be able to get more people involved, and have them come and do the 'paparazzi-thing' and yell and scream when they get outta their limos," said Moore.

Sunday afternoon, as the guests enter the prom, they'll be walking on a red carpet and surrounded by hundreds of supporters, clapping and cheering them on.

If you're interested in the event, be at Racine Festival Hall at 4:30 p.m., and be ready to smile.
