Milwaukee water main breaks, pumping station shut down

MILWAUKEE (WITI) --  Milwaukee Water Works identified a water main leak outside of the Texas Avenue pumping station forcing the Howard Avenue treatment plant to shut down.

The pipe carries water from Lake Michigan, to the pumping station, and then into the treatment plant.

Sources say the pressure in the distribution system had to be increased at another treatment plant in order to keep with the water demand in Milwaukee, but it resulted in over a dozen water main breaks in the city, mainly on the north side.

Milwaukee Water Works says the water is still safe to drink, but some blocks may be without water while repairs are being made. It could take days to fix the problem.
