Drivers beware: Law enforcement to push "Click It or Ticket" law

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's the law here in Wisconsin to wear a seat belt every day, but from May 19th until June 1st, here is an extra push for the law commonly called- "Click It or Ticket".

“You try to notice it, before you stop the car,” explains Officer Mark Sterle with the Brown Deer Police Department, “Because a lot of people will have the tendency to try to sneak the seat belt back on when they realize they are getting stopped.”

Brown Deer Police Department is going to be one of 400 different law enforcement agencies across the state that are going to be on an extra lookout for people out on the roads not buckled up. Officials say they are not trying to issue more tickets; they are trying to get the message out that wearing a seatbelt is important- it can save lives.

“If an adult chooses not to wear it, that`s their choice, even though it’s against the law but kids don`t necessarily have that choice. And having seen a crash where a child wasn`t belted in several years ago it can do a number on them,” said Officer Sterle.

Violations for not wearing a seatbelt start at $10. It can be up to $75 dollars for a child.

The Brown Deer Police Department received a grant from the state for participating in this last year. They bought a movable speed board with the grant money.
