Former youth soccer coach arrested, accused of having heroin

WAUKESHA (WITI) — A youth soccer coach in Waukesha is arrested for felony possession of heroin. The 37-year-old man is a former Milwaukee Wave player — and U.S. Futsal player. On top of the charges he now faces, he’s no longer coaching.

A criminal complaint says Teston Dewayne Gilpatrick had overdosed on heroin and was found by his child’s mother when she arrived to pick up their child. When police arrived, they found heroin in the kitchen. They administered Narcan, a drug used to counteract a heroin overdose. It likely saved Gilpatrick’s life.

While in the hospital, the complaint indicates Gilpatrick told police this was the only time he tried heroin because he was stressed. He also said he had a lot to lose because he is a soccer coach.

Ken Ward, the President of Strike FC Wisconsin, says Gilpatrick was a coach for three different teams for the club since June 2013.

“We had been made aware that he had been arrested for a substance abuse item that we didn’t feel was proper for him to be able to continue coaching,” said Ward.

Gilpatrick was coaching kids in the under 13 and under 12 levels before he was terminated.

“It’s a shock to the system. But we also have to react to it as quickly as possible to keep the kids as safe as possible,” said Ward.

In the criminal complaint, the mother of Gilpatrick’s child told police he had a history of drug and alcohol abuse. He apparently had two OWIs — but had been clean for the past five years.

Gilpatrick faces up to three-and-a-half years in prison if he’s convicted on the charges.
