Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer, police deliver stern safety message

GREENFIELD (WITI) -- Jansen Fest is the unofficial kick-off to summer. While many are out partying, police will be out making sure they do it responsibly, and law enforcement has a message.

Summer fun is in full swing at Konkel Park, and Memorial Day weekend will be filled with parties and festivals, but police want to make sure everyone is having fun, safely.

"People are in a good mood, good food, good times," said John Surges, festival-goer.

The sun shines on the crowds.

"This is the best day that we've had yet," said Marlene Fritz, festival-goer.

While people take a spin on the rides, it is the ride they take home, that police are concerned about.

"Intoxicated driving is not acceptable," said Chief Wendtland.

27 area law enforcement agencies from across southeast Wisconsin have joined forces.

"We're trying to send the message," said Wendtland.

Police say drunk driving will not be tolerated.

"If you choose to drink, we don't want you to get behind the wheel," said Ken Pileggi, Village of Mukwonago PD.

They're letting drivers know, this weekend, law enforcement will be amped up.

"We will stop, test, arrest as many impaired drivers as need be to make sure to keep our community safe," said Pileggi.

A message, not falling on deaf ears, on a weekend so many are looking forward to.

The Greenfield festival is part of a ride share program, so if you don't have a ride home, volunteers will call a cab for free. Just one of the ways everyone wants to make the roads safe.
