Go-kart welding leads to fire: Multiple departments called out to garage

VILLAGE OF SUMMIT (WITI) -- Multiple fire crews on Tuesday afternoon, May 27th were dispatched to the scene of a garage fire in the Village of Summit.

It happened just before 3:30 -- in the 3500 block of Bartlett Road.

The first fire unit arriving on scene observed heavy fire and smoke coming from an unattached two-story, three-car garage.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System was called, and multiple fire agencies were dispatched.

Due to fire conditions changing rapidly, a second alarm level was requested for this fire.

Multiple fire crews deployed additional hose lines to protect the home and extinguish the fire.

The fire did not extent to the house.

Dousman Fire officials say the fire caused approximately $30,000 in property damage to the detached garage.

The cause of the fire was determined to be related to the occupant of the garage welding on a go-kart and flammable liquid igniting.

The fire spread rapidly, and the occupant was unable to extinguish it.
