ARRESTED: Police jail second suspect in playground shooting

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police say they have arrested the second suspect accused in the playground shooting of 10-year-old Sierra Guyton.

He is a 28-year-old Milwaukee man.

Police say the man will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office int he coming days for charges.

On Wednesday afternoon, FOX6 News spoke with the second suspect's mother.

She says she had no idea her son, identified by a police source as "Jamey" was involved.

"I'm his mother. I haven't been told anything. I'd like to say, 'I hope it wasn't him,'" Jamey's mother said.

An 18-year-old convicted felon was the first to be arrested in this case.

Sylvester Lewis

He is Sylvester Lewis -- and he was officially charged in the case on Wednesday, May 28th -- one week after the shooting occurred.

18-year-old Lewis faces three charges, including: one count of first-degree reckless injury (use of a dangerous weapon), one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety (use of a dangerous weapon), and possession of a firearm by a felon.

10-year-old Sierra Guyton was shot while on a playground near N. 28th Street and Clarke Street on Wednesday evening, May 21st.

The playground is across the street from the little girl’s home.

According to the criminal complaint, Lewis and another individual were shooting at each other, when the child was caught in the crossfire — and shot.

The complaint against Lewis says he was armed with a loaded gun and was confronted by a man about stealing childrens' clothing.

The complaint says Lewis told investigators he saw Jamey "upping" or displaying a gun -- threatening to kill him.

Lewis told police a shot went past his ear -- and he returned fire towards Jamey and the playground an estimated eight times.

FOX6's Jeremy Ross asked Jamey's mother if something like this is something that's not in her son's nature.

"I don't want to talk on that," Jamey's mother said.

Online court records show Jamey was convicted of a 2003 second degree reckless homicide -- and eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison with eight years of extended supervision -- including one condition: no guns.

"I'm going to find out what happened -- why that individual was released once again," Mayor Tom Barrett said.

Sierra Guyton was taken to Children’s Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

She was apparently shot in the head.

On Wednesday, May 28th, a relative of Guyton told FOX6 News the girl is in stable condition. She has been taken off some of the medications she was previously being treated with.

We're told she has moved her eyes, but for the most part, she remains unresponsive.
