Creepypasta responds: “We are a literature site, not a crazy satanic cult”

Morgan Geyser, Anissa Weier

WAUKESHA (WITI) — Two 12-year-old girls are accused of plotting their friend’s murder for months — and attempting to kill her this weekend. 12-year-old Morgan Geyser, and 12-year-old Anissa Weier were charged as adults on Monday, June 2nd. The victim in this case suffered 19 stab wounds, and remains hospitalized.

The criminal complaint against Geyser and Weier says police spoke with Weier — who spoke about a website called “Creepypasta.”

The complaint says Weier explained this is a website that talked about horror stories — and people can create their own stories.

It is on this website that Weier told police she learned about “Slenderman” — the leader of Creepypasta. Just below Slenderman is the killer. Just below the killer is the proxy. In order to be a proxy, Weier explained, you have to kill someone — to show your dedication to Slenderman, according to the complaint.

The complaint says Weier told police many people do not believe Slenderman is real — and she said she wanted to prove the skeptics wrong.

The complaint says in December of 2013 or January of 2014, Geyser told Weier — “We should become proxies of Slender.” Weier told police she said: “Okay, how do we do that?”

That’s when Weier told police Geyser said they needed to kill the victim in this case to prove themselves worthy to Slender, according to the complaint.

Creepypasta.com released a statement regarding the stabbing. FOX6 has posted a short excerpt from the post.

I’ve recently been alerted to the horrific events that took place in Wisconsin.

I’ve received both messages of concern and blame, and while it seems that the Creepypasta Wiki is bearing the brunt of media attention and finger-pointing, I feel it’s necessary for me to make a statement.

First and most importantly, my condolences go out to all the families involved. I cannot even imagine how painful and confusing and awful this has to be for them. I don’t have children, but I can imagine how my mother would feel if something like this happened to me, and it absolutely breaks my heart to even consider her having to go through that. The families of the young ladies who committed this crime also have my heart going out to them – I know this can’t be easy for them as well, and I’m sure they’ll have to deal with mistargeted backlash and anger even while they try to get through such a trying time themselves. So when I say that I extend my deepest sympathies and my prayers to those affected, I hope that you understand that I mean it. I know that words can seem hollow or come off as mere lip-service to the cynical, but it’s the truth.

Creepypasta Wiki also addressed the stabbing in a blog posted early Tuesday morning. The post, titled “Fiction, Reality, and You,” calls the stabbing an “isolated incident” that does not “represent or attribute the Creepypasta community as a whole.”

This wiki does not endorse or advocate for the killing, worship, and otherwise replication of rituals of fictional works. There is a line between fiction and reality, and it is up to you to realize where the line is. We are a literature site, not a crazy satanic cult.

For most of you reading this, you’re probably thinking this is a no-brainier that stories here are mere fiction and know that they are just mere fiction. This blog addresses to newcomers and “die-hard believers”, who will otherwise, likely to believe in these stories.

Hopefully, the gruesome crime that happened in Wisconsin will not repeat itself again, and our hearts go out to the families affected by this crime.

Blaming the website is like blaming the knife for the stabbing. Glad they made a statement, but some guy running a website from his mom’s basement didn’t stab the victim. It still comes down to the mental state of the two little monsters and the parents that failed to monitor their activities over a period of MONTHS.

    • France Selina Williams

So true!! Those girls made a choice to do what they did… They decided to let whatever they read manifest into reality. At age 12, I knew right from wrong. My children (who are 6 and 5) know right from wrong, and they even understand not to hit other people and not to yell at others… so at 12 these girls KNEW that stabbing someone is WRONG. I dont blame the parents, or the website. These girls premeditated a murder. Period.

      • Daniela

Obviously what we feed our mind will inevitably affect our heart. Parents should monitor what their kids watch on tv, video games, internet and even books. This applies to adults as well. Why do you think there are so many pedophiles: because adults feed their mind pornography.

      • The freethinking liberal

It is believed that the girls are mentally ill and if this is the case then it may be the fault of the parents for not monitoring them.

    • JT

@Daniela Sorry, but pedophilia is hardwired into the brain. Somebody doesn’t become attracted to kids as an adult because they saw some porn when they were too young.

      • Geneva Avila

Hardwired into the brain? I don’t think so… well at least not in the context you are saying. Pedophilia is a result of children being sexualized through media and other means – mainly exposure and desensitization (maybe abuse). So much of societal behavior is a direct result of influence. It is ignorant to believe otherwise. If we do not recognize this truth than we are forfeiting our power to change.

      • susan

Actually.. recent research DOES suggest paedophilia is a result of a certin brain wiring.
However I belive that it is just a sexual orientation, just like any other.
I could watch lesbian porn for a lifetime, but i woldn’t become a lesbian. So seeing chilren sexualised wouldn’t make me like children, just as it wouldnt make me like old people if they walked around in their lingere winking at everyone.

    • Kendra

I’m late but it was truly the girls fault … They know that killing is bad…and they decided to do something wrong witch it doesn’t affect the creepy pasts and its not really there fault … Blame it on the child that knew what was right and what was wrong

  • rose

We have to do better as parents! How can you not see or monitor your child(ren)’s activity online? It’s lazy and very inattentive. As adults we are the keepers. This was over months of planning! Know were your kids are, watch them closely and monitor their behavior.

  • P. Williams (@Wi53072)

Why does our culture dwell so much on feeling empathy and sympathy for the monsters that commit such crimes? All this hand wringing about being politically correct over the matter. The fact is simple. These so called “children” aka MONSTERS knowingly and willing planned this MURDER period. Now, they need to be incarcerated for a very long time as a result. The surviving child and her parents will deal with these physical and emotional scars for the rest of their lives. As such, the VICTIMS deserve the empathy, sympathy and JUSTICE!!!!!

    • mjklemm

Well put…. I feel the same… They committed the crime, now must pay for it, it’s simple…

    • Fed up with you. Yes, you.

It’s like you didn’t even read the article. At no point was anyone empathizing or sympathizing with the two girls, you twit.

    • susan

Children learn to develope morals at an early age, no child is born evil and wants to hurt people innately. If a child never recieves love and empathy from others, then they can’t learn to treat others that way.

It is the responsibility of the parent to teach a child to love and care for others, these children were clearly not brought up properly, they were probably neglected or deprived by their parents of the love they needed.

These children didn’t know the seriousness or the impact of their crime, as they were never taught to know. I agree they should be punished, but more importantly they should be rehabilitated.

Rehabilitation is possible, it has worked many times before. It isn’t fair for children to be punished for life because they were born to the wrong family.

  • mjklemm

This is the children’s fault, I would love to blame the parents, but who would have ever thought that their 12 year olds were planning a murder, not one that I know of, I am a father of 3, two boys and a girl. Not one of them ever came close to hurting another person, EVER…. These young girls have deeper issues than a website calling to them. There must have been some kind of sign..

    • greybuscat

It does make one wonder how much they knew about each girl’s psychosis. I mean, coming to them in their dreams? Mansion in the woods?

I’ve been dealing with crazy my whole life, but I’ve never quite heard anything as delusional as this.

    • susan

The parents are partly at fault.

Children are not born evil, they have to learn to care and love others through their parents. Just like a stray dog will attack, because they haven’t been taught not to bite, not because they WANT to cause harm.

It is likely that the parents did not give the children love or care, and the fact that they didnt realise their children were planning murder for months, may have been a small indicator that these children were being emotionally and socialiy neglected.

  • Mayu

The creepy thing is… last night I looked through creepy pasta’s wiki about “proxies” and in the comments someone asked THE DAY OF THE STABBING… “Can a 12yr old be a proxy?” Someone answered yes and someone asked why. The person answers “just wondering”. The post was deleted last night, but I caught a screencap. No one would have known about the Slenderman thing yet cause that was recently released. That said… Slenderman is an excuse to do the evil that was in their hearts. If not for the character, they’d have found another reason.

  • Running Rabbit

Twelve year old girls know right from wrong. These girls obviously took to fantasizing to the stories on this web site too far. It is obvious that it is a literature site. Parents DO need to monitor their children’s internet activity. These girls wanted to turn make-believe into reality.
Don’t blame the web sites, the video games, the books, etc. Children have always been capable of committing murder. These murderers need to spend the most part of their lives behind bars.
My sympathy to the victim and her family.

  • falcone eddy

Obviously a premeditated action, and since these two girls admittedly were initially hesitant and kept handing the knife back and forth to one another before the first stab was dealt; they both knew this would be a crime they shouldn’t be committing. Throw in the ‘Slenderman made us do it’ factor for the possible slight mental instability at the time scenario, and you’ve either got long straight prison time, or long mental institution time. Just please get these two off the streets and out of the gene pool.

  • Murphy1976

I’m still shocked that none of the comments are asking about how the little girl is doing. I just heard from somone else in Twitter that it is being reported that somone DIED! For all that I have read so far, and I have been following up on this very closely, that the victim was stable but still fighting for her life.

I informed the webmaster of creepypasta.com of what happened last night, and he made sure that this message went up as soon as possible. We can’t look blindly at “where the blame falls” when a little girl is still clinging to life!

I agree with the first comment I read: blaming the web community is like blaming the knife, like blaming the fork for getting fat. This just continues to get worse with all the conjecture and the little amount of actual all-around facts.

    #creepyreality

  • ltruns

The parents probably allowed this stuff because they were as weird as the kids! I agree this website may be weird or odd or horrific, but in the end it’s the psychotic kids who did the crime. How depraved are you to not only DO this, but to PREMEDITATE this. The parents should be charged with criminal negligence, however I guess we the public don’t really know what their role was in their kids lives. Obviously the actions speak for themselves as to how much the parents knew about their kids online and gaming activities. They probably didn’t care to pay attention. The reports say the parents are horrified. Well what good does that do anyone now?! You can’t be horrified when your kid throws a fit in a store because you say no and every other time they get what they want.

  • Mayu

also… while I wouldn’t blame the site… Looking through it last, the site just send to be a place for wannabe horror/mystery writers… Granted I didn’t go through it all since it’s not my thing… I still wonder why 12yr olds had free use of the internet. In this day and age… I’d keep a close eye on what sites kids are visiting, who they are talking to, and I would watch how long they spend online. These kids had issues and would have found a video game or tv show or sonething to feed their evil… but free range of the Internet made it much easier for them. That’s more parent that the site itself. blaming them for the crime… just wondering how 12yr old are accessing the internet so freely. I don’t have kids so maybe I don’t get it. Prayers to the victim… thoughts with the parents of all involved, but I hope they don’t take it easy on the kids because they think “aww they’re just 12” cause imagine if they did this at 12, what they could do at 22 if they get away with it. And one girl amis to no remorse. Sick.

  • Stove

Last night I asked a coupe of our kids what they did for fun when they were 12 years old. The answers were that they did fun activities and sports outside. Then I thought to myself what I did at 12 years old. Drew chalk roadways in the drive to ride our bikes around, played football in my friends backyard and so on and so forth. Get these kids outside to learn what is really out there. Life is busy, yes I understand that. Let’s all slow down for a minute and reconnect with our kids and let them experience what we experienced.

I feel bad for all the people involved in this situation. The two young girls that committed this horrible act, the young girl injured and of course all the parents. This was senseless.

  • Mayu

Stupid phone… I meant to say I’m not blaming their parents for the crime… just wondering how they didn’t watch what their kids were reading and posting. I still think it’s nothing to do with the site though. The stories I read last night are fairly tame and obviously fictional. I think these girls had evil in their hearts… Not insanity. Prayers again to the victim and her family.

  • tomny shallow

I feel sorry for the parents. Raising your kids right and then they do this. I hope they get the support they need. Also I pray the girl recovery is fast. We need to reach out and get involved. My church popular creek church will pray . Please if anyone needs help pkease find it before something happens

    • kayla

How do you know they were raising them right? The public has had no insight into their upbringing and home lives

  • Elizabeth

You can’t blame the kids. Twelve years old is far too young. I’m pretty sure all of you parents would say the same thing if your children, God forbid it, did something like this. I mean sure they do have instinct and that should have told them not too. But they’re not monsters as most of you say. They should have a mental evaluation. And the parents should be charged in some way. But twelve years old? That’s sixth grade, and you’re not fully developed mentally at that age. Children are innocent and gullible. So blame the fact that the parents don’t keep a close eye and the fact that there may be something wrong with the two.

    • michele schiesl

So, at 12 kids don’t know right from wrong & shouldn’t be held accountable for their actions? I agree that parents these days let technology babysit their children more and more, but please…it’s that same mentality that says grown adults aren’t responsible for shooting at each other in front of a playground and wounding an innocent child.

      • susan

Most 12 year olds know right from wrong because their parents TAUGHT them right from wrong, these children were clearly not taught the difference.

Children are actually very violent at a young age, small infants will hit and pull the hair of their friends, and it is only when they’re taught through reward and punishment that they learn not to do so and to feel empathy.

    • Chandler

No we do not. The website is in no way the problem. And The government does not deserve any control over it. It’s a website for writer’s in a Stephen King-esque style, to write their stories. Whether you choose to believe them or not is entirely upon you. However, if you want to monitor your kids web usage, go ahead. Do not blame the site. As another person said, blaming the site for the murder is like blaming a fork for getting fat.

    • Jessica

The last thing we need is more legislation banning any sort of free speech. What we need is for PARENTS and FAMILIES and SOCIETY to engage with each other, talk and be involved with your friends and family and children and neighbors. Pay attention to children, know what they are doing, what they are reading. The internet is a part of our life but it is not a playground for children to play in. It’s like leaving them alone in a bad neighborhood to navigate the streets alone, just don’t do it. This isn’t a job for the government, it’s a job for us as a society.

    • kristal

You would ban creativity? If that were to ever happen you would have a serious uprising on your hands.

  • Reality check

Are you all trying to tell me that you NEVER tried to sneek into an “R” rated movie? Sneek out of the house to meet with the friends your parents didn’t like? Sneek a swollow of someone’s beer before the age of 18 or 21? Act cool by cursing in front of your friends when no adults were around? Anything similarly defiant? These girls went roller skating with Dad the evening before it happened. That’s an attentive Dad! Kids will find a way to do what is wrong sometimes. As parents, it’s our job to redirect them before it is too late, not to hover over their every move, every detail, every second of every day. Yes, I can see the computer monitor, but I don’t sit next to my 13 year old. And yes, he is in sports, my 23 year old is into the Arts. Every kid is different, and most parents do “their best”. I send my prayers to EVERYONE involved (and an extra for the victim and family).

  • wolfie123

Okay, nobody should take away anything or keep an eyes on them 24\7 and keep then in a box. If they come acrossed weird things when they are older.. what are they gonna do? Run back to mommy and daddy? no. they need to be exposed to these things in a nice manner or they will be locked in a cage all their life and be set free and DO these things. i pray not but..

Creepypasta had nothing to do with the killing again its like blaming the knife.

  • Anon

The site is not to blame. They should be old enough to decipher that these are fictional stories written by other people. It’s sort of like Stephen King novels. I believe the girls just used Creepypasta and Slenderman as an excuse. I feel terrible for the families. But also think for a moment…the man who created that website for those who like things in that genre. Like horror movies/novels. He must be receiving hate…for the actions of those girls.

  • juliekitty

I just hope that this never happends again sense I watch this stuff and my friend does too and I don’t want it to be taken down due to actions that were not nesessary. It’s just a bunch of myths and interesting stories ment for entertainment. I give wishes to all.
    ~JulieKitty~

  • Adrienne

The site isn’t meant for children, though… I’m a member of the creepypasta fandom, and in no way do any of the members endorse violence portrayed in our stories. Mystery writers don’t encourage murders and theft, police drama writers don’t encourage crime… But it happens anyway. This world is full of people who are easily impressionable due to seriously unstable mental states. These girls were looking for some trigger to perform violence, and it happened to be creepypasta. It could have been anything.

We write horror stories for fun and amusement. We don’t intend for children to read it. Most of us are really appalled by this incident, really, and there’s a movement to get funding for the victim’s medical bills. As I stated, we do NOT endorse this kind of incident. We’ve made it clear that these are all works of FICTION, meant to just scare us for fun.

  • nancy

To all the children at this age group: life is tough and your in the process of turning into young adults but still want to be a child. Stay young as long as you can, don’t let anyone define who you are. It’s tough but it will get better. Just think the two girls accused life will never be the same they acted in a bad way and think of all the wonderful things they will miss, going to schooldances, sleepovers, going to homecoming, graduating, learning to drive their parents their family…the list goes on and on. Just remember these two girls will never know anything and everything is gone over a very bad choice and very wrong. If you think a choice is bad, IT IS. Get outside ride your bike go for a walk join a club do community service, you know when a though is wrong TALK TO AN ADULT, or a trusted teacher or friend someone you trust because they can help guide you to a better state of mind or get you the help you need, so you don’t end up making a wrong choice and hurting Someone or your self, there’s more options then violence and there’s to much hurt in this world. Be a kid don’t make a decision you can’t ever make go away, these girls aren’t grounded for what they did and they knew what they did was wrong when they did it and now they won’t ever be able to change it. Get off the computers phones tablets video games and enjoy being a kid while you can and think before you act, you will be amazed at what you will find if you get outside and find it, even how just a walk around the block will turn negative feelings into a much more fulfilled and positive feeling. Don’t do what these girls did to their classmate (not friend) because friends don’t hurt another and to their self. Be proud of who you are. Stop the crazy violence this isn’t the answer. And fiction or fictional means NOT REAL. Have fun being young. Remember your not going to be liked by everyone, that’s life don’t worry about the people that don’t like you be happy because you have people that love you.

As a Creepypasta writer I must say that we who write these stories are not to blame either. The stories we write are all meant to be believable as that is what really scares and creeps out people (hence the name Creepypasta). Those girls obviously had no state of mind between what is fiction and what is reality. CreepyPasta is not the one to be blamed for. Those two kids made their choice to take a fictious character from a Horror literature website and tried to make it real. I’m a huge fan of CreepyPasta and in hope he makes more stories about every single character he has created including Slenderman.

What i want to know is why they did this because children don’t do this because when they never experienced something traumatic .
What i think is that the home situation was not so good as said or maybe the school situation ..
Just like when children cut them self there is actually always a reason .
Or they are totally crazy born but then they would already have recognized
    that .
And the most childeren from now learn from the internet from a age of 5 and then get addicted … That is just a fact.

  • kristal

I know this has been said time and time again, but the site and the writers of these stories are in no way at fault. I also do not blame the parents of these children because they probably did everything they could to keep their children on the right track while still giving them freedom to do what they want. The parents cannot always control what their children are exposed to and what they find. The internet is a huge place where you can find pretty much anything at anytime. Even if they had seen what those girls found they probably thought that the girls knew they were stories and knew the difference between right and wrong. My prayers go out to everyone that is involved, even the two girls because I pity them.

I am just a kid and I know stabbing someone is wrong but it can’t be that people start stabbing ech other to jus become something of “Slender” . I love to listen too Creepypastas and Slender is one of y favorites but I think kids should know that the stoies aren’t real. It’s also realy easy to blame the reepypasta website it’s just like blaming video games for seone that just randomly is going to shoot people. Yes they got the idea of Slender from the site but there has to be something wrong in your mind to actually kill someone. The point that I want to make here is “Stop f*cking blaming sh*t it’s to easy you won’t just kill someone if you play lots of CoD or BF or some other Shooter

I agree fully that Creepypasta shouldn’t be shut down. It is just a fandom in which people can share stories that they make. From the stories I have read, none of them had actually said ‘go and murder people.’ I feel so sorry for the three families that have been through all this. But to be honest, I wouldn’t blame thousands of people for some girls’ actions. It is their choice to know the difference between reality and fiction. I know a few people who struggle with this, but in my opinion, parents need to monitor what their kids read and/or watch. I am definitely not saying that I don’t think the girls’ parents are horrible at their job, I am saying that ALL parents need to watch their kids. And there is a lot of finger pointing and hatred to the fans of Creepypasta, which I have gotten some of that hate, and I don’t think that it’s very fair to hate on others who haven’t done anything. It hurts our feelings and we need the finger pointing to stop. It was their choice to stab that precious girl. Not the authors!

It’s stupid to blame the website. Yes it can put killing in a new light because you feel sympathy towards some of the characters because of what happened to them. But otherwise it’s just urban legends on a computer. Tats just like blaming Bloody Mar, fire someone dressing up as her and killing people in there bathrooms.
They made the mistake, they decided to act like idiots and stab there friend and now they are doing the time in jail that comes along when you do that.
If the parents or media want to blame it on something because “Our daughters would never hurt a fly” or “How could two 12 year old girls do this without joining or something like that”. Open your eyes they did something and it was there choice. Thousands of other people are in the creeepypasta fandom. Do we go around murdering people NO may joke about it or make a reference to one of the stroys, but we DONT kill.
Also I’m sorry I came off as rude but please just think about it from different perspectifes

Creepypasta shouldnt be shut down creepypasta is a fandom that thousands of people share and should never end creepypasta shouldn’t be shutdown becuse two girls think that a creepypasta slenderman will be summoned if she kills her freind another reason why i creepypasta shouldn’t be shutdown is because t the girl suvived the 12 stabbings and creepypasta wiki clearly explains the definition of creepypasta it says creepypastas are legends told to scare people
