UPDATE: Men charged in playground shooting plead not guilty
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- 18-year-old Sylvester Lewis and 28-year-old Jamey Jackson, the two men facing charges in connection with the playground shooting that seriously injured 10-year-old Sierra Guyton, both entered not guilty pleas Friday morning, June 6th.
18-year-old Sylvester Lewis is facing one count of first-degree reckless injury (use of a dangerous weapon), one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety (use of a dangerous weapon), and possession of a firearm by a felon.
28-year-old Jamey Jackson is facing one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
Detective Erik Gulbrandson took the stand recounting witness statements from when Sierra was struck by a bullet while the two suspects allegedly opened fire on May 21st.
"She was laying there motionless, she had a gunshot wound to the back of her head area," said Gulbrandson.
Gulbrandson claim a witness saw Lewis riding a mountain bike near 28th and Clarke.
"There were 10-15 kids that were on the playground... He rode up to the group of 5 individuals that he had recognized, one he knew as Jay Murder another he knew as Jermain Crittendon," said Gulbrandson.
Crittendon supposedly approached Lewis and they began to argue about stolen baby clothes. That's when Jackson (J-Muder) allegedly got involved.
"Mr. Lewis said while this was taking place he observed Mr Jackson stand up and begin to draw a weapon from his waistband. Mr. Lewis stated that...he drew the weapon he had in his front pocket," said Gulbrandson.
Lewis supposedly was shooting toward the playground while Jackson shot away from it, meanwhile, the little girl was hit.
Elder Malcom Hunt, from Pastors United, says Sierra's family goes to see her everyday.
"Sierra remains on life support and that she is believed to be able to survive from this incident. However, the injury has caused such traumatic neurological damage that it would require full-time medical care for the rest of her life," said Gulbrandson.
The court found probable cause and bound both defendants over for trial.
According to the criminal complaint in the case, Lewis and Jackson were shooting at each other, when the child was caught in the crossfire — and shot.
The criminal complaint indicates Sierra Guyton was shot in the head — and was left unconscious and suffered brain damage. She was found lying face down on the pavement when police arrived on scene.
