Police: 73-year-old man shot inside corner store during attempted armed robbery

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are on the scene of a shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon, June 11th near 33rd and Galena.

Police believe the shooting followed an armed robbery attempt.

It happened shortly before 3:00 p.m.

Police say a 73-year-old man was shot.

It is believed that a struggle ensued between the victim and an armed suspect -- at which time the suspect's weapon discharged -- striking the victim.

Investigators are working to determine whether the victim is an employee or customer of the corner store where the shooting occurred.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Police say their investigation is ongoing.

Paulette Thomson lives next door to the corner store and says she could hear the victim screaming before a shot rang out.

She says this isn't the first time this store has been targeted by robbery suspects.

"He's a pretty giving person. If you've got something that you don't have it right now, he'll give it to you. He'll let you pay him later. He's a good person. He just doesn't deserve half the things that happens," Thomson said.
