Milwaukee home goes up in flames, fire spreads through walls

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a spreading house fire near 4th and Melvina. The fire happened around 5:30 p.m. inside of a duplex.

Two  people were home on the second floor when the fire started. Officials say they climbed onto a second floor porch, and firefighters helped them down with a ladder.

Officials say the fire started in the basement and spread into the walls of the home. The building has at least $50,000 dollars worth of damages and is no longer livable.

The Red Cross was notified about the fire, but it is unknown if they assisted the people who lived inside of the building.

The cause of the fire and when the fire initially started is currently unknown. The incident is still under investigation.
