Four officers injured after driver of stolen minivan strikes MPD van

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Four officers were injured Monday morning, June 16th after a stolen minivan struck a marked police prisoner conveyance van at 35th and Brown at about 3:30 a.m.

The officers were conveying an adult female prisoner, who was arrested for violating a restraining order, when the conveyance van was struck by a stolen 1999 Dodge Caravan. The driver of the Dodge Caravan allegedly ran a red traffic signal while traveling westbound on Brown, causing the southbound police van to strike a light pole.

The sound of the crash woke up some who live near where it happened.

"I just heard a big boom. I ain't never seen a car, a police car smashed. That's ridiculous," Joshua Jones said.

"I heard a loud boom and I didn't know what happened. I hope everybody's okay. That's all I can say," Rich Land said.

"Boom! I got up and I looked and I saw the police van over there by that pole but I didn’t really see the van over there, because I didn’t come all the way out to see the van. But yes, it woke me up," Carmae Jordan said.

The occupants of the stolen van fled on foot and Milwaukee police have since made three arrests.

All four officers were conveyed to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

Three of the officers have since been released and one continues to receive treatment for non life-threatening injuries.

The female arrestee in the police van was not injured as a result of the crash and remained in custody throughout the incident.

Many neighbors who didn't hear at least saw the aftermath, as police remained on the scene of the crash for several hours -- until around 9 a.m.

"I'm fitting to leave. I'm fitting to go. I come from Brooklyn, New York. I'm fitting to go back. I came here for peace and quiet. No. Only in Milwaukee!" Monica Smith said.
