Closed due to flooding: West Bend Community Memorial Library should re-open Thursday

WEST BEND (WITI) -- West Bend's City Administrator tells FOX6 News the West Bend Community Memorial Library on Poplar Street is closed Wednesday, June 18th due to flooding.

On Wednesday morning, library employees, upon reporting for work, discovered water inside the library.

Upon further inspection, it was discovered the water entered the building through a rear door -- adjacent to an outdoor construction area, where a park is being built next to the library.

City of West Bend crews responded to the scene, and it was discovered that a mesh construction site filter was clogged with construction debris, preventing rain water to run off as it should.

The damming effect then directed rain water toward the library -- and into the building.

City building maintenance workers and a private contractor have been brought in to help clean the library's carpet.

Library staff and the cleanup crews are checking to see if there is any permanent damage to the structure or its contents.

The water affected the library's first floor and its basement.

We're told one of the library's elevators suffered water damage and will need repairs before it can function again.

The only other damage appears to be the wet carpet, and there is some water damage to some ceiling tiles in the basement.

We're told it does not appear that any of the books, computers or other library materials were damaged.

Library staff say the library should re-open on Thursday.
