"Enough is enough:" As vigil held for another shooting victim, some are taking action

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police have identified the man gunned down at a gas station near Green Bay Avenue and Cornell Street on Tuesday afternoon, June 17th.

Bryson Brown

He is 34-year-old Bryson Brown.

The fatal shooting happened around 1:00 p.m.

Milwaukee police said Tuesday the circumstances behind this shooting are unclear.

Police say their investigation is ongoing -- and say they continue to seek the suspect responsible.

A vigil was held Wednesday evening in Brown's honor.

"We're just tired of, you know, losing loved ones. He's going to have his first child and he won't be here to see it, girl or boy," a loved one of Brown's told FOX6 News.

"Enough is enough -- and we need to start taking back our neighborhoods," community activist Tracey Dent said.

Dent is hoping to make Milwaukee's streets safer with the help of clergy leaders.

"I called out to some churches and say 'hey, we all need to come together,'" Dent said.

Dent has reached out to 10 congregations, including Triad Ministries and Morris Cathedral Life Center.

The plan is to organize block watches near church buildings, and offer help beginning or supporting block watches in church members' neighborhoods.

"There's thousands of churches in the city. Just imagine if we can get half of those churches involved and into block watches," Dent said.

Dent admits those involved in violence aren't likely attending church services, but Dent says he's more interested in the eyes of church members -- who can see problems in the community and call police if they see something suspicious.

"We can turn some things around," Dent said.

"It's going to take everybody," Brown's loved one said.

There is hope action can be taken to prevent gatherings like that held Wednesday evening in Brown's honor -- in which loved ones are left grieving following senseless violence.

"We got to do it ourselves," Dent said.
