Cleaning up after an EF2 tornado: UW-Platteville officials say no damage dollar amount yet determined
PLATTEVILLE (WITI) -- Cleanup continues after the National Weather Service says two tornadoes touched down in Platteville during the overnight and early morning hours of Monday, June 16th into Tuesday, June 17th.
Tornadic damage was identified on the UW-Platteville campus.
The National Weather Service says a "low-end" EF2 tornado with 120 mph max wind speed touched down near the UW-Platteville campus.
The track was about two miles west of Platteville -- running through the UW-Platteville campus, to two miles southeast of Platteville, ending right before U.S. Highway 151.
The EF2 damage occurred near the Engineering buildings on the UW-Platteville campus.
Campus was closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
UW-Platteville officials say "New Student Registration" resumed on Thursday.
According to UW-Platteville officials, the tornado significantly impacted:
UW-Platteville officials say damage included broken windows, partial roof destruction, bent light towers at the stadium, and downed and split trees.
No one was killed, and there were no significant injuries that required medical attention on campus.
UW-Platteville officials say assessment activities are continuing with UW-Platteville staff, UW System staff, insurance teams and engineering groups.
No dollar amount has been determined, and no dates for the building re-openings have been set yet.
The impacted buildings have been secured with fencing, and only authorized personnel are allowed into the sites.
UW-Platteville officials say those staying in the impacted residence halls have been transported to other residence halls.
UW-Platteville officials say youth camps have been cancelled for the rest of the week. They will resume next week -- with exception of the scheduled engineering camp, which will not be held.
Officials say opportunities for volunteers and monetary donations are being organized.
Meanwhile, the Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center says workers from DNR Parks, Facilities and Forestry are in Platteville to assist with chainsaw work clearing debris on city property and clearing access to residences for emergency vehicles.
A Platteville Tornado Relief Fund has been established at Mound city Bank.
A multi-agency "Resource Center" has been opened at Platteville High School, and will be open until 4:00 p.m. Thursday and from noon to 7:00 p.m. Friday.
Platteville High School is also playing host to a shelter established by the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
The second tornado that impacted the Platteville area earlier this week occurred near the Platteville Golf and Country Club.
The National Weather Service says this was a "high-end" EF1 tornado with 105 mph max wind speed.
The track was about 1/2 mile long with a 50 yard width.
Damage includes some trees knocked down and a roof torn off an apartment building.
