"You need to take the services to where the people are at:" Church holds annual resource and health fair

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A church pastor says, before you can feed the soul, you have to feed the body. True Vine Missionary Baptist Church held it's 6th Annual Resource and Health Fair on the city's north side. Every service offered was free.

Before you can even make it inside, you'll likely meet Alice Lawrence, church member and book broker. Except this agent doesn't take a percentage as you've heard, the books are free.

"No negative books here. We have everything they learn here about God from teenagers on up to the little toddler," said Lawrence.

In fact, everything here is free. Books and clothes are out on the front step, and inside, a host of organizations have set up shop.

"Financial advice going on, we have prevent blindness where you can get your eyes tested," said Janice Harrell, organizer.

Ramona Jensen has a table, telling people about lead poisoning from the paint in old homes.

"Not only does it affect the childrens' education and their inability to learn but it also has health effects that follow us as adults," said Jensen, social development commissioner.

Sally Nicerson is showing people how to make natural household cleaners with vinegar, water, and tea tree oil. There's also blood pressure checks, HIV tests, and clinical breast exams.

"As we know you need to take the services to where the people are at. You can't wait for them to come to you," said Brenda Dockery, Nurses Affecting Change.

Again, the running theme is, everything is free.
