We Energies: More than 100,000 customers without power at some point Monday after storms push through

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Thousands of We Energies customers were without power after strong storms blew through southeast Wisconsin on Monday evening, June 30th. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, July 1st, over 33,000 We Energies customers were without power.

We Energies spokesman Brian Manthey says 90,000 people were without power across the We Energies system, as of 10:00 p.m. Monday.

As of 10:00 p.m., We Energies crews had restored power to about 20,000 customers.

Manthey says since the storms hit on Monday evening, 110,000 customers have been without power at some point Monday evening.

Manthey says an outage of this size hasn't happened since 2005. Before that -- We Energies saw an outage similar to this one twice in 1998.

Here is a breakdown of Monday night's power outage:

-          25,000 customers are without power in the West Milwaukee and West Allis areas due to a substation losing power in the area of 60th and Lincoln Ave.

-          In the metro Milwaukee area (which includes the city and its surrounding suburbs, 40,000 people are without power.

-          22,000 people are without power in Waukesha and Jefferson Counties.

-          15,000 people are without power in the Racine/Kenosha/Walworth County areas

-          17,000 people are without power in Ozaukee and Washington Counties.

This, as of 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 30th.

We Energies crews are working to restore power.

There is no timetable for when people should expect to have their power restored.

We Energies officials are hoping to have everyone back online by Tuesday.

Manthey says the number one cause of the power outages Monday evening is wind damage -- which includes downed trees and power poles.

Manthey says lightning strikes have also been a factor.
