MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police say two people were killed in a wreck involving four vehicles that shut down the intersection at Sherman and Burleigh on Thursday, July 10th. A FOX6 photojournalist saw it all unfold. Police say the crash was caused by a speeder who blew a red light.

Two people in a car that was struck in the intersection were killed in this crash. Police say they are the vehicle's 52-year-old operator and her 45-year-old passenger -- both women.

FOX6 photojournalist Jeff Frings was directly behind the car that was struck.

He, along with multiple other witnesses, say an SUV blew through a red light at a high rate of speed -- causing the collision.

Police say the SUV was being driven by a 62-year-old woman.

The crash happened just before 5:30 p.m.

"The cars slowed down because the light was gonna change and instead of slowing down in its spot, (the SUV) sped around the other cars. By that time, the light had changed and it just went right through," Rosie Caradine-Lewis said.

"I just seen the car go by, speeding and stuff at the light. It hit one of the cars and then the other ones hit afterward. It was going at least about 70. It was going 70 at least," Gary Williams said.

"Oh my God, I just prayed. I closed my eyes, prayed, and the chain reaction started after that. I couldn`t believe my eyes," Caradine-Lewis said.

After the initial collision, two other cars were caught up in the wreckage.

Police say the operators of those vehicles -- a 53-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman were taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

The 62-year-old driver of the SUV was also taken to the hospital.

Dozens of onlookers gathered as the intersection was closed -- covered with debris.

Neighbors say for years, speeders have been a problem in the area.

"Just hoping the city will finally do something about the accidents. I live right here on this block and we`re constantly having accidents," Jones said.

Neighbors hope the crash sparks change.

"I think it`s a matter of speed, and individuals not paying attention and running the light and because of that, people`s lives are being taken away," Jones said.

While the crowds eventually cleared away from the scene, the intersection remained closed hours after the crash.

Neighbors have suggested putting in more signs, speed bumps or even a roundabout at the intersection -- and they also want drivers to pay attention.

Police say the 62-year-old driver of the SUV has been taken into custody following this crash -- on two counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle.

The police can’t do traffic stops for speeding because it’s harassment remember. Thank goodness people drive somewhat responsibly in Kenosha.

  • Mike Johnson

i agree the speed is part of the issue but also most of the people in this area weave in and out of traffic drive in the parking lane the traffic lights are meaningless

Ever watch people drive on that side of town? TOTAL DISREGARD for laws or limits. Your side of town looks that way because YOU MAKE IT THAT WAY

  • LFO

What’s sad is that the city has to be looked to to find a solution to this problem ( I.e. – create roundabouts, etc) because we can’t simply count on people to actually STOP at red lights. Wherever that lady was going, the extra minute it would have taken to stop at the light could’ve saved two lives. Shameful.

When a crash kills someone and the killer broke the law, they should get a minimum of 40 years in prison. Now a person might get 3 years and that is not a deterrent. When will the stupid politicians realize that the law is supposed to deter criminal behavior as well as punishment for the law breakers? Politicians are worthless for the most part!

From the voice of the late great Redd Foxx, “You Big Dummy!”…..Guaranty she was driving in the parking lane, aka the North Side Passing Lane

  • Paul

The 62 year old driver went around stopped traffic. You can’t prevent stupidity on the North side of Milwaukee.

I just don’t get the mentality of people. A wise man by the name of Forest Gump once said “Stupid is as stupid does.” And that was just plain stupid and cost the lives of two people. It is sickening!!!!!!!!

I know both women…they worked together, each had children, and were very highly thought of by those around them. This is truly a tragedy. When you drive a vehicle, it is a 3000-6000 pound weapon..PAY ATTENTION AND BE F-ING REASONABLE WITH YOUR SPEED!! If this 62 year old was really driving 70 mph in that intersection, she should be sentenced to the maximum.

Watching drivers these days… green means go, yellow means speed up, and red means i got 5 extra seconds to blow threw this light and not get in any trouble.

Charges STILL havent been charged against this driver. If it were reversed and a white woman killed 2 black women going 70 miles an hour down that street she would have already been charged, Seeing as it was a black woman who killed the 2 white women she hasnt been charged yet. Notice the white people are NOT rioting. Yet.
