"We have people that have lost 300 pounds:" Milwaukee hosts TOPS weight loss national convention

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- You might notice extra activity downtown this weekend -- not only is Bastille Days going on, but hundreds from all over the country and Canada are in town for TOPS's, international recognition days. TOPS stands for Take Off Pounds Sensibly.

It's like a fashion show, but it's not the clothes that are drawing attention, it's the people!

"She has thrown away her size 26 clothes and replaced them with a size 12," said Beverly Enos, retired board of director.

Although, the now-too-big clothing they're disregarding, is getting some attention too.

"We have people who have lost 300 pounds," said Enos. "They come to be recognized but also to be inspired."

TOPS is a not-for-profit weight loss organization. It doesn't sell food or products, it just focuses on health. Participants meet weekly, where they share their stories and get nutrition and exercise advice from experts and staff.

"I have so many friends here that I have met over the last 30 and 40 years coming to TOPS and to these types of events. I get to see them every year and see how successful they are and how happy they are and what has changed in their lives," said Enos.

Others are brand new to the program, like Matthew Matter from Minneapolis.

"Everyone here in Milwaukee has been so fun. Welcomed us, it`s a great time, great organization," said Matter.

Since starting with the organization in 2012, Matter has lost 54 pounds.

"I didn`t think I`d have this kind of success honestly, this soon," said Matter.

And this weekend, he's being recognized for it, but it's more than just awards and recognition that make the trip worth it.

"It's everyone getting together. Common cause thing, we`re all here together, we all fight the battle," said Matter.

TOPS is founded and based in Milwaukee, but has since spread all over. People came from all over the country and Canada for this weekend's event.
