9-month-old son of Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura passes away

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The nine-month-old son of Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura passed away on Friday, July 11th. The circumstances of the death have not been released.

The fans pack in to Miller Park -- they try to take part in the pre-game fun, but there's an obvious cloud hanging over the game.

Segura, 24, is now on his way to the Dominican Republic -- on bereavement leave. Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke says there is no time-table for his return.

"Everyone in that clubhouse was affected quite a bit with what happened with Siggy," says Roenicke.

During a pre-game briefing with reporters on Saturday, July 12th, Roenicke talked about how Segura and his teammates are grieving. He said, "This is a game we're playing. It's certainly not as important as life, but we know it's important to a lot of people in the community."

He says the team is in a state of mourning.

"I think last night was the difficult part. This morning coming in. You try to concentrate on what you need to do instead of concentrating on what happened," says Roenicke.

Fans express their condolences to Segura, who is experiencing an unimaginable loss.

"It feels like a part of an extended family, so we feel really bad for him," says Pat Kelley, Brewers fan.

For Dorene Place, the tragedy hits close to home.

"We've lost a child, so...she wasn`t as young as his...but we know what the pain is and it never goes away....so our hearts go out to him," says Place.

A somber day at Miller Park, as a team and fans, pull together offering what they can from Milwaukee.

Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez acted as the team spokesperson. He indicated he's not sure how Segura will handle this situation, but that he has the team's support. The Brewers will play Elian Herrera at shortstop until Segura returns.
