Plan ahead: Getting around with a full freeway closure in the Zoo Interchange
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Get ready for some traffic back-ups and delays this weekend, July 18th until the 21st. I-94 will be closed in both directions from the Zoo Interchange to WIS 100.
That means there could not only be delays on the interstate, but on the roads being used for detours as well. Two the main ones the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is hoping to divert traffic to are Bluemound Road and Greenfield Avenue.
“It will take a little bit longer to get to your destination this weekend but like I said we have very good alternate routes, and it’s not going to be as painful as you might think,” said Jason Roselle, Construction Supervisor for WisDOT.
Some drivers will be directed to exit on Moorland Road in those cases, which can be a busy area as it is. But WisDOT officials say it necessary to do a full closure.
“We are going to be setting some large steel plate girders over the freeway for the railroad structure we are building,” said Roselle. “It’s a massive complex operation to set these steel plate girders over the freeway. There’s going large cranes set up right on the freeway.”
To make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible, law enforcement will be on hand. Roselle said 10 different agencies have been contacted already. Officers will help keep traffic moving, keep the construction zones safe, and help avoid congestion at some of the high traffic intersections.
“Just be patient with the work we’re doing, we appreciate that and we’re looking forward to getting this full freeway closure done and behind us and moving forward with the next phases of the project,” said Roselle.
Dot officials say they mailed out postcards to homes and businesses along Greenfield and Bluemound that there could be some increased traffic in the coming days.
That closure starts Friday at 11 p.m. and ends Monday at 5:30 a.m..
